Upcoming events alert

There’s a lot happening in the next week or three in Warleggan – don’t miss out!

Over the next seven days, in the Jubilee Hall:

  • Thursday 21 Nov, 7.30pm: Parish Meeting, where, amongst other issues, the planning application for a 6-house development opposite the chapel in Mount will be discussed ~  see our parish meetings and Ocean Housing pages
  • Friday 22 Nov, 9am – 2pm:  Village Greens with, as normal, a range of fresh produce and other items for sale, and the chance to catch up with friends or make new ones over tea, coffee, breakfast or lunch  ~ see Village Greens page
  • Saturday 23 Nov, 10am – 1pm: Philippines Typhoon Disaster Fundraising Sale, with all proceeds going to fund a Shelter Box (or maybe more than one?) to help the survivors  ~ teas, coffees, pasties, cakes, raffle, bric-a-brac, and more  ~  see our Typhoon page, or find out more about Shelter Box* 
  • Monday 25 November, 6pm – 7pm:  Decorating the Hall for Christmas ~  all welcome to help put up the Christmas decorations in the hall ~ see our Hall Events page
  • Tuesday 26 November, 12.30pm:  Lunch Club  –  join us for a fabulous two course meal, followed by tea/coffee – must be booked in advance ~ for info, and booking details, see our Hall Events page

And in the lead-up to Christmas:

  • Children’s Christmas Party –  we’ve heard that Santa Claus will be coming to meet the local children at this party, to be held at the Hall from 4.30pm to 6.30pm on Saturday 14 December –  contact Tamsin on 821982 for details, and to reserve a place for your child
  • Carols for Christmas –  as well as the normal services held at St Bartholomew’s Church (see schedule) and at Mount Chapel (see schedule), there will be:
    • a United Carol Service at the Chapel on Tuesday 10 December starting at 7pm
    • the Chapel’s own Carol Service on Sunday 22 December at 6pm, and
    • Carols by Candlelight at the Church on Christmas Eve, Tuesday 24 December, starting at 6.30pm.

And before you know it, it’ll be New Year’s Eve, where the best place to be will be…

  • New Year’s Eve Ceilidh –  promises to be a great evening at the Hall, a chance to relax and try out your dancing skills, with Choughed to Bits providing live music and, thankfully, guidance on how to do the dances.  We are applying for a licence to serve alcoholic drinks –  and let’s each bring a plate of food –  more details soon.

Games evening Friday and more…

In case you haven’t checked out the Warleggan website* recently, here’s what’s happening…

  • This Friday 18th Oct, the day after tomorrow, we’re having our TableTop Games evening at the hall, starting 7.30pm.  Free entry. Come along and play a few games – and if you have games you’d like to bring along, then please do!  Come and play, or come and watch. There’ll be refreshments, with a licensed bar, hot pasties, and snacks. Plus a raffle.  It’ll be a great relaxing fun evening, a chance to show off your skills, or develop new ones.  Amongst the games we hope to have:  Dominoes, Chess, Drafts, Backgammon, Cards, Othello (or ‘Reversi’), Darts, Cluedo, Bingo, Tri-ominoes, Poker, Jenga,  Connect 4, Kerplunk, Card-Monopoly ...  Bring along your games (including any of the above), or other ones  – Does anyone have table football, for instance?
  • Then, next Wednesday 23 Oct, we have the  History Club Talk on the Pentewan Valley Railway (The Tea Treat Train) by Rob Evans, Jubilee Hall, 7.30pm – if you’re not a member yet, come along anyway – the more the merrier.
  • Some of us may be joining the Farnworth family for Roger’s Day on Sunday 27th October – see details
  • The next Lunch will be on Tuesday 26th November –  all seats must be booked in advance;  £4 a head, two courses – call Jasmina on 01208 821223, or Gill on 821494.
  • Hall hire – remember, anyone is welcome to hire the hall anytime – just check out the hall hire pages on the website.
  • Why not organise a quiet skittles evening for you and your friends (the skittles set is now kept in the hall, and is available for use  –  £10 plus standard hall hire charge)  –  or why not hold your birthday party there?
  • And we’ve got a great kitchen, so if you want to cook a meal for your friends, or get someone in to do it, then get in touch.  If you do it before the end of the month, it’ll be just £5 on top of the hall hire charge, which doesn’t even cover the likely electricity charges  –  be advised though that from 1st November, the charge for use of the full kitchen will be £10 for regular users, and £20 for occasional users, still great value.
  • And Christmas is coming soon  – book now if you’d like to hold a party at the Jubilee Hall.
  • Oh, and remember to keep New Year’s Eve free, as we shall be bringing the new year in at the hall with a Ceilidh – with refreshments, and we’ll be applying for a licensed bar to stay open til late.

Coming up: Skittles, lunches and games

As the evenings start to draw in again, it’s good to know what’s coming up at the Jubilee Hall…

  • Fun for Friday 13thSkittles Evening:  this coming Friday 13th September at 7pm, the skittles will be dusted off, and you’re all welcome to come along, young or old, to demonstrate (or discover) your skittle-skill.  Come along, whether as a ready-formed team of four or as individuals ready to form a team. Spectators are of course also welcome  There will be a licensed bar, with soft drinks, snacks and pasties on sale, and it should be a great evening.  To help us have an idea on numbers, please leave a message for Jasmina (01208 821223) by this Wednesday (11th Sept)  if you plan to come  – and register your team if you have one (it’s £5 a team)…  more info
  • snip hall-lunch-sept2013Warleggan Lunch:  in what may develop to be a regular event, lunch is to be served at the hall on Tuesday 24th September at 12.30pm.  Everyone, any age, is welcome, but you MUST book in advance – let Jasmina know (01208 821223)  – two courses, just £4 a head.  Support this new initiative – it’s a great opportunity to catch up with friends and neighbours and put the world to rights….  more info

Other news and events:

  • Parish meeting:  come along on Thursday 12th September, 7.30pm at the hall to discuss whether and to what extent we are interested in developing a Neighbourhood Plan, and whether and how it would like to do this in collaboration with neighbouring parishes.  Other issues may be discussed –  including the new idea from Ocean Housing, now for six houses – see sketch plan  – and they have agreed to extend the deadline for comments til the following day 13th Sept.

The Big Do to be done – this Saturday

Yes, the Big Do in the Field is fast approaching – tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon, 27 July.  Across the parish,  rhubarbs are being inspected, lettuces titivated over, and runner beans talked to.  Someone out there is practising the Madeira cake recipe for the 17th time. Photos will be flying out of printers, and anxious youngsters will be adding their finishing touches to the animals they are making from vegetables – now where does that parsnip go?

It should be a good year, not just for the Annual Veg/Flower/Handicraft show to be held in the hall, but the Big Do in the Field  promises, too, to be lots of fun:

  • We’ve got the children’s fancy dress contest, the dog display, the dog show and the children’s games (and maybe something for adults too, I hear!)
  • And then we have the stalls, cream teas, hot and cold food, BBQ, beer, wine and non-alcoholic drinks, ice-cream, bouncy castle, games, the raffle, and who knows what else?

A few reminders:

  1. Please bring entries for the Veg/Flower/Handicraft show to the Jubilee Hall latest by 10am Saturday  – download entry form.
  2. If you’re bringing a cake for the cake stall, that’s great – please suggest a price for it with a label if possible.
  3. Children, please make sure your parents (and you)  take care when crossing the road between hall and field;  and drivers, please take care too.

Come and hear Susie Hansen from the  Falklands who will tell us everything you wanted to know about  life on this remote outpost of the UK.

Susie will be telling us about the Falklands.  She is a great character and has been holidaying here in Warleggan for several years.  Her husband, Ian, is a member of the Falkland Islands Council and together they farm a huge flock of sheep.  There will be plenty of opportunity to ask question and / or chat to her after the presentation.

The Big Do in the Field

Saturday 27th July 2013, 12.30 – 5pm

Come and join in the family fun! In the field opposite the Jubilee Hall in Mount, we plan to have a range of stalls, hot and cold food, hot and cold drinks, cream teas, a beer tent, raffle, a dog display and dog show, a bouncy castle, children’s games and a chance to have a go playing ‘Smite*‘.   Plus, of course, we’ll have the ever popular ‘Annual Vegetable, Flower and Handicraft Show’ in the hall.

The sun is shining on Warleggan. So what’s on this month?  Starting tomorrow, we have…

  • 6th June, 7.30pm, Jubilee Hall:
    If you haven’t yet done so, reserve your tickets now with Liz for tomorrow evening’s entertainment, supported by Carn to Cove:  “Hoagy, Hornpipes, Handel & Hoedown” with Mayor & James.   A mixture of music and humour  ~ £8 adults /£6 concessions /£22 Family (4) – Best to reserve your tickets with Liz L. on 01208 821551, or there should be some tickets on sale at the door  ~ more info
  • 11th June, 7.30pm, Jubilee Hall:  There will be an open meeting to discuss Ocean Housing’s plans for affordable housing in field adjoining Rosevean, in Mount, everyone welcome  – see our Ocean Housing page
  • 12th June, 7.30pm, Jubilee Hall:  Jubilee Hall Management Committee meeting –  everyone welcome – maybe you have some fun ideas for this year’s ‘Big Do in the Field’?  Or maybe you’d like to join the committee itself – you may already have heard that they’re keen to get a younger person in on the committee, and/or someone to represent the interests of children and young people.

Coming up in Warleggan

The days are getting longer and brighter – time to get out!  Here are some ideas…

  • The History Club is heading off to Pentewan this Wednesday 22 May – there’ll be a walk around the village and old port, guided by knowledgeable local man Rob Evans.  We’ve been asked to get there by 6pm prompt, and it’ll take more than half an hour to get there  –  some of us might want to stay back for some refreshments at the local  afterwards?  Hopefully we can share transport?  – see history club page for more info
  • Music is coming to Warleggan on 31 May and 6 June –  You know how buses come two at a time, and then there’s nothing for ages?  Well, we’ve got two real treats coming up within days of each other, and then nothing til December.  These two performances are supported by Carn to Cove, and there is already quite some interest  being shown from outside the parish, so don’t leave it too late to book your tickets:
    • ‘Bach Pilgrimage’ –  a violin recital in Warleggan’s St Batholomew’s Church on Friday 31st May 2013, 7.30pm  –  Thomas Bowes will play Bach’s Six Sonatas and Partitas, and there will be readings of poems too.  Thomas Bowes is an accomplished player, and has led many of the UK’s finest orchestras including the London Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonia,  London Sinfonietta, and the  BBC Symphony Orchestra – see our C2C page for more info and ticket info
    • “Hoagy, Hornpipes, Handel & Hoedown” with musicians/entertainers Mayor & James performing a range of songs and more, mixed with a ‘unique brand of off-beat humour’ –  anything from a ballad version of the Queen of Sheba, to Flanders and Swann –  will be at Jubilee Hall on Thursday 6th June 2013, 7.30pm – see our C2C page for more info and ticket info
  • And finally a date for your diary:  the Big Do will be on Saturday 27th July, and we’ve already got some info about it up on our new ‘Big Do 2013’ webpage, including schedule of classes for the Annual Vegetable, Flower and Handicraft Show –  find out more about the Big Do 2013
