The parish lunch on Wednesday is still going ahead ~ remember, today’s the deadline for booking your place – more info

Coming up this week

The Big Do is now behind us   – it was a great success, everyone seemed to have had a good time, the sun shone brightly (‘though some of us might have preferred the thermostat had been set a touch lower!), and it was great to see so many more activities there –  and we raised over £1,000 a year for the hall, too.  Thanks to everyone who helped make it go so well, including, of course, everyone who joined us on the day.  Check out the over 140 photos on the Warleggan website.

Four oak tree saplings now sit proudly in the new graveyard and parking area next to St Bartholomew Church, planted on Monday in memory of the four from the parish who were lost in the First World War – see photos

So what’s coming up?  Well, the next few days we will have…

Friday 8 August:
~ Village Greens, 9am-2pm at the hall, come for your fresh produce, jams and other goodies, a friendly cup of tea or coffee, or why not try a cooked breakfast or a tasty mushroom soup for lunch ~ latest update
~ Sankey Evening, Mount Chapel, 7pm ~ info

Saturday 9 August:
~ Duck Race & BBQ, Pantersbridge (the bridge between Mount and St Neot). Launch of ducks at 4pm. Enjoy a stroll from the bridge to the weir to finish with a BBQ. Children can run, cycle or skate. Limited parking at the weir.  Ducks available to purchase for 50p on the day, or contact Nina on 821293 ~  info
~ Loveny Choir, Cardinham Parish Hall, 7pm, Dave Wherry memorial concert with Millpool Chorale – £6 per head

Sunday 10 August:
~ Rivers of Warleggan Poetry Day, 10.30am ~ places still available –  if you like, you can just turn up. Bring a packed lunch, and stout footwear or wellies, as Claypit Lake as we call it (Glynn Valley) is very muddy. John Keast will talk about Glynn Valley clayworks as part of the day, and Pam Leppitt about ecology around River Bedalder as another part. Helen Jagger will be leading the poetry element. Arrive by 10.30 at Jubilee Hall –  more info

Monday 11 August:
~ Hall Management Meeting, where one of the main items will be to review this year’s Big Do, 7.30pm at the Hall ~ all welcome ~  we had a similar review after last year’s Big Do, and that’s why this year’s was better.  So hopefully you can help us make next year’s better still ~ more info

Big Do etc. this week

You may have seen the posters for it, produced by children at Cardinham School…

You may have read about in the papers….

Yes, the Big Do in the Field, Warleggan’s small and friendly annual fete, is this coming Saturday, 26 July, on the field opposite the Jubilee Hall in Mount.  There’ll be more happening than previous years – so come along!  The weather looks encouraging too.

Free entry and free parking, of course.

Events to be held on the day include: Children’s Fancy Dress competition, Children’s Races, a Dog Display, Family Dog Show (see schedule of classes) and Tug of War, and it looks like we may have one or two extra events!

We’ll have our ever popular barbecue tent (a meat one and a vegetarian one), a bar, cream teas, ice creams, cake stall, bouncy castle, bottle stall, tombola, guess the weight, face-painting, candy floss, hoopla… –  or you might like to try your hand at Smite, Petanque, or Welly Wanging!  We also hope to have a play area for the tiny ones, and one or two (maybe more??) classic cars on display.

There’ll also be some car boots there  –  to book a £5 pitch, call Jasmina on 01208 821223, who can also be contacted for any other information or if you’d like to help out at our Big Do.

Meanwhile, we’ll have the ever popular Annual Vegetable, Flower and Handicraft Show in the hall opposite – see schedule of classes and entry form.

For all the latest info – see our ‘BigDo’ page on the Warleggan website – www.warleggan.net/bigdo2014

Chairs and tables:  folk like to sit down and enjoy their burger or cream tea in comfort – so, if you’re happy to lend an outside table or two and/or some chairs, please bring them along on the morning.  You might want to label them underneath, in case we get similar-looking ones.  If you need help with transporting them to the field and back, contact John Hammond on 821433

ALSO HAPPENING THIS WEEK:

  • Wed 23 July, 7pm: History Club Walk, Fowey  – Sally & Ros will take us on a guided tour through Fowey with its rich maritime history.  Meet in the Station Car Park (follow the direction signs to the Bodinnick Ferry at the roundabout at the top of Fowey and stop in the first car park on the left – parking fee £2.50). Please ensure you are at the meeting points at 7.00 p.m. so that we can start on time.  The walk is relatively level and easy going with a number of stops and last about one and a half hours. It would help if you could let Gill know (821494) if you hope to attend ~ info

Next week in Warleggan

We’ve got a lot on this coming week at the Warleggan Jubilee Hall in Mount:

Survey deadline ~ Friday

Firstly, the ‘What do you want?’ surveyA big thanks to all of you who have already filled it in; it’s really appreciated. If you haven’t yet done so, the good news is that the deadline is extended by a week.  It’ll only take a minute or two to fill, and will help us know which activities and clubs there may be a good amount of interest in. So do please have your say, even if it’s simply to say you aren’t interested!

The survey is open to everyone living in or near the parish, as well as all hall users and visitors from neighbouring parishes.  See here for more information, and to download the form.

The deadline is now Friday 28 March: so, if you didn’t yet get round to handing in your completed survey form, do it now and hand it to a hall committee member, or you can drop it off in the box in the hall when you come to any of the following upcoming events over the coming seven days

    • Pilates –  starts at 12 noon, newcomers welcome – phone Gill 01208 821494 if you’re thinking of coming – more info
  • January 2014: relaxing after lunch
    Lunch Club ~ Wednesday

    • Lunch Club, 12.30pm – a special treat this time, fish pie followed by tiramisu – still just £4 a head, for the two courses with tea/coffee to follow; a vegetarian option (cheese and courgettes) is also available. All are welcome, young or old, but you MUST reserve your place in advance, latest by Sunday 23rd – call Gill 01208 821494 to book, or for more info.  Note the change of date –  yes, it’s on Wednesday this time  – see our lunch club page

Lunch and skittles

A quick reminder of what’s on in Warleggan:

  • lunch club sept2013Lunch Club, 12.30pm this coming Tuesday 28 January – main course, desserts and tea/coffee at £4 a head – hopefully you have already booked, but if you haven’t yet, Gill is willing to accommodate a few more – just let her know 01208 821494 (or email this website and we’ll pass on the message) as soon as possible, but no later than 1pm Monday please.
  • skittles sept 2013Skittles Evening is coming up next month (Friday 21 February) –  Whether or not you came last time (see photos), you’ll surely want to book your place with Jasmina (01208 821223), or through email.  Like last time, we’ll do it with teams of four;  there’ll be refreshments and we aim to have a licensed bar for the evening.

    >>> and I (Chris) am wondering if people might like a quiet pre-Skittles-Evening Skittles Bash, to hone talents and fine-tune the arm action.  If we have a reasonable number of people interested (not too many, not too few), we could set up the alley one Friday evening – we’d need to cover cost of hall and skittle hire between us, so we’d probably each need to chip in about £1 or £2 (e.g. if we get 12 of us were there, £1.50 would cover the charges).  We can bring our own refreshments (thermoses or bottles), and agree how we play once we get there – no need to form teams first.  How about this coming Friday 31 January from 7pm?  If you might be interested, let me know (01208 821409 or email me) –  who knows, it could evolve into something regular?

And finally:  just wondering if anyone has ideas for new clubs or new events that could be held in the Hall?  I’m thinking of drafting a short survey, asking people (amongst other things) to state their preferences on a list of possible events.  If you have an idea that you’d like to see included on the list, whether it’s a beetle drive, a cookery club or the production of Warleggan’s own pantomine – whatever –  then let me know (01208 821409 or email me) and I can add it to the list of potential events to choose from.

Pub quiz tomorrow night

Saturday 11 January – 7pm, Jubilee Hall

Hi folks – a quick reminder – we’ve got a very ‘different’ pub quiz tomorrow night (Saturday 11 January) at the Jubilee Hall, starting 7pm….
